Do you know that the 2015 World Scrabble Championship was won by a Nigerian?

Jighere Wellington won the 2015 title at the championships held in Perth, Australia. He bested 130 players from different countries in 32 rounds and then defeated Englishman Lewis MacKay with four straight wins in the best-of-seven final round to win the title.

He is the first African winner of the championship.

The World Scrabble Championship is the most prestigious title in competitive English-language Scrabble. It has been held every second year since 1991, and annually since 2013.

 

How about about the Nigerian math professor who has solved the 156-year old Riemann Hypothesis???

Opeyemi Enoch, senior lecturer in mathematics at the Federal University in Oye Ekiti, Nigeria, delivered his findings on November 11 at the International Conference on Mathematics and Computer Science held in Vienna, Austria.

The Riemann Hypothesis, considered one of the hardest maths problems, is one of the Clay Mathematics Institute's (CMI) seven Millennium Problems, all of which come with a $1 million prize.

Ok, technically Prof. Opeyemi's solution is still being vetted and it could be years before the CMI accepts his solution and awards him the prize. Nonetheless, he deserves a mention for his willingness to take up the challenge of solving this complex problem, and more importantly, showing his students how to make money honestly from the internet...

 

In Dec 2015, the White House announced Adewale Adeyemo's appointment as deputy national security adviser (NSA) for international economics. The 34-year-old son of Nigerian immigrants is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and the Yale Law School. Before his appointment, Adeyemo was the deputy chief of staff at the department of the treasury, a position he held for three years.

 

Have you heard of the Dafinone family, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as having the most chartered accountants in one family?

Three sons and two daughters of Senator David Omueya and Cynthia Esella Dafinone of Lagos, Nigeria, all qualified as members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales between 1986 and 1999. Their father had also become a member of the same institution in 1963.

 

Nigerian David Waboso, Capital Programs Director and the top engineer for the London Underground (LU), has been recognized with a CBE in the Queen's 2016 New Year's Honors.

Trained as a civil engineer, David initially taught mathematics in inner London secondary schools, before resuming his engineering career in both the private and public sectors. In 1995 he won the prestigious award of UK 'Project Manager of the Year'.

Sir Peter Hendy CBE, London's Transport Commissioner, said: "David is one of the most talented project engineers in the world and this recognition is richly deserved. He is a giant in his profession with a world-wide reputation, and this brings him and his work the national recognition it richly deserves."

 

Nigerian linguist, teacher, and writer, Kọ́lá Túbọ̀sún, has been awarded the Premio Ostana International Award for Scriptures in the Mother Tongue, 2016 (Il Premio Ostana Internazionale Scritture in Lingua Madre 2016). He is the first African win the award.

Organized by the Culture of the Chambra D’Oc in the town of Ostana (Cuneo, Italy), the prize is given for the defense of an indigenous language, and for educational and informative activities by the recipient to protect it. Read more at:
